French Program Reviewhttp://rep.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/6French Program Review

Following are the contents of a letter being distributed to all families at Harriett Todd and Regent Park public schools regarding an upcoming French Program Review.

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) introduced the French Immersion (FI) program, beginning with Grade 1, in September 2013. The FI program is one component of the SCDSB's French as a Second Language (FSL) program. At that time, the board identified which schools would offer the program to ensure fair access to students from across Simcoe County. In order to maintain this fair access, the program must be reviewed on a regular basis to help balance enrolment and to minimize impacts on home school student populations.

A Program Review (PR) has been approved by the SCDSB Board of Trustees for our school. A proposed option is splitting the FSL program, with some grades attending Regent Park Public School and the others attending Harriett Todd Public School. All students in the English program would continue to attend their home school.

This review is being conducted to ensure balanced enrolment at our schools. The results of the review would take effect in September 2017.

We are hosting an information session to address parent questions and get feedback on the proposed changes.

Date: October 13, 2016
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Harriett Todd Public School

Further information is included in the SCDSB's 2015-16 Capital Plan. You can view it online at www.scdsb.on.ca under 'Board' and 'Capital Planning'. Click on the Capital Plan 2015-16 link.

I invite you to contact me at 705-734-6363 x11208 with any questions or comments you have.

Sincerely,

Douglas Paul
Superintendent of Education

French Program Review FAQ's

Why is a Program Review necessary?

Certain schools can be over capacity due to new residential growth, specific programs being located at the school or other factors. Transferring students and programs to other schools that have space helps reduce over capacity pressures, use of portables and balances enrolment at our schools.

When would the change in programming occur?

It is recommended that any changes will take effect at the beginning of the 2017 – 2018 school year.

Will there be any changes to means of transportation to and from the schools?

Students who require bussing to and from their French as a Second Language (FSL) school site will continue to receive this service if they are not within walking distance (as per policy) of their school.

Will this change affect any other attendance areas?

Changes to regular program attendance areas are not anticipated at this time.

Can a sibling of a student in the French program attend the same school?

Siblings can only attend the same school if that is their designated home school.

Will my child have to go to a different school for JK/SK?

Applying and commitment to the FSL program within the SCDSB is a voluntary decision. Students may be required to attend a different school for JK/SK before moving to their FSL site for Grade 1 entry. As the program continues to grow, more sites may be provided which will minimize the frequency of students having to switch schools after SK.

Will there be an opportunity to provide feedback to the board?

Yes, feedback forms can be obtained at your school and/or available the night of the meeting.

How much space is designated in a school for the FSL program?

Program space is reviewed every year and in instances of heightened pressures in a school(s), a recommendation may be provided in the SCDSB's annual Capital Plan to conduct a program review to alleviate enrolment pressures and continue the growth of the FSL program.

What is the retention factor for the FI program? If it continues to grow, won't there be a lack of space, and ultimately the need for more full-track FI schools?

Retention in the FI program has so far been strong since being implemented a few years back. The program is expected to grow in future years with the EFSL (Extended French as a Second Language) program being phased out. The 2016-17 school year is the final school year for Grade 5 EFSL entry.

For more information on the SCDSB's FSL program, please visit: http://scdsb.on.ca/Programs/Pages/French-Programs.aspx.

New Student Dress Code http://rep.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/school-news/5New Student Dress Code
Dress-Code-2016-03-30.pdf The SCDSB is introducing a new student dress code this school year. The dress code was developed in consultation with staff and students. Students are expected to respect the guidelines when dressing for school. Our school is a safe space. We work to be equitable and inclusive and understand that students may choose to express themselves through their clothing choices. Student clothing cannot pose a safety concern or conceal identity. Exceptions are granted to students who wear head coverings or other garments/objects for the purposes of religious observance, medical or sensory needs, or other reasons protected by the Ontario Human Rights Code. The SCDSB dress code is attached as well as available in the student agenda and online at www.scdsb.on.ca. If you have questions about the dress code, you can contact the principal or the SCDSB Equity and Inclusive Education Team at 705-728-7570.
