Library News
Welcome to the New Regent Park Library!
This fall, with the help of a few key volunteers, we have merged the David
H. Church library collection with the existing one. We are proud to offer
our students and staff over 10 000 books and resources. A HUGE thank you
goes out to Theresa Thompson and Mary Hick who spent many hours helping
to arrange books on shelves and to Lauretta our high school co-op student
who catalogued 100’s of new books! A dedicated group of library
monitors helps keep track of the over 500 books a week that we circulate
to our Regent Park readers.
We are now awaiting the SCDSB’s
new library automation system called “TLC”. This program will
allow staff, students and their families online access to our collection.
Already our collection is being transferred over to this system and training
of teacher-librarians will begin in February.
Clubs for Kids
Our school reading club for the Orillia Public Library’s Battle
of the Books has begun. We anticipate Regent Park making another grand
showing in this competitive, but fun day later in April.
And speaking of O.P.L. … we hope that we will be able to further
encourage our students to love reading with a visit to our new neighbour
at the Public Library’s temporary location just around the corner
on Gill Street. Please take advantage of the many after-school and weekend
clubs for children and teens.
The annual Forest of Reading club has
started. Primary (Blue Spruce), Junior (Silver Birch) and Intermediate
(Red Maple) students read and judge new books in order to vote on their
favourite by May. Canadian authors are featured and many of our staff
members are joining in the fun of reading these books, too. For more information
visit www.accesssola.com.
Online Resources
We hope you enjoy the online resources and activities that are linked
to our school website library page. These are meant to enhance your children’s
learning and projects. We cannot put passwords on our website, so please
remember to put the password and login “hard copy” sent home
with this newsletter onto your fridge or computer bulletin board for future
reference.
I have enjoyed meeting many parents and
families of Regent Park. If you have any questions about your children’s
library books or would like to access a resource, then please visit or
call the school, 326-7481.
